STICKS & STONES

We once had strong winds in my area which blew branches of all sizes off the gum trees.  Many people saw a big mess on the pavements and streets, but I saw beauty simply waiting to be enhanced.  Each morning when I went for a walk, I picked up three or four “good sticks” and carried them home, delighting in the potential that each one held.  I then painted them all with a coat of enamel paint, let that dry and commenced to decorate the sticks using a wide variety of mixed media – a process that was both stimulating and meditative. The African and Australian influences are clearly evident with vibrant, almost tribal colours and patterns.  The word that comes to mind when looking at them is ‘ethnic’.
